
A local bicyclist, an elderly man in his eighties, succumbed to injuries on Wednesday, two weeks after being struck by a car while riding along Foothill Expressway. The collision, as reported by the City of Palo Alto, occurred on October 4 at approximately 12:18 PM.
The incident occurred when the cyclist entered the vehicular traffic lanes from the dedicated bicycle lane and was hit by a 2022 Mercedes-Benz sedan. Having worn a helmet, the cyclist sustained a major head injury when he was thrown from the bike. Working the case, the driver, in their nineties, was on scene and cooperative with authorities. Police have informed the public that they are not suspecting the involvement of drugs or alcohol at this time.
Emergency personnel, including the Palo Alto Fire Department and paramedics, quickly responded. The cyclist received immediate transportation to the local hospital, where he eventually passed away due to the extent of his injuries. Upon request, the Santa Clara County Office of the Medical Examiner-Coroner will release the victim's identity.
The investigation into the cause of the tragic event is ongoing and conducted by the Specialized Traffic Accident Reconstruction (STAR) team.
