Emergency teams responded to a concerning scene near downtown Sacramento's railyards on Monday, where a partially collapsed tunnel at a homeless encampment prompted a meticulous search for potential victims. The Sacramento Fire Department detailed the incident in a social media post, describing how search dogs and crews scoured the site at Bercut Dr/Summit Tunnel Ave after reports suggested someone might be trapped underground. Despite extensive digging around the sinkhole area, the efforts concluded without locating any individuals.

During a routine cleanup of the homeless encampment by officers from the California Highway Patrol, the compromised structure was uncovered by chance. Situated near the intersections of Interstate 5 and Richards Boulevard, the existence of the tunnel, according to an ABC10 report, revealed hazards that transcend the precarious lives led by Sacramento's unhoused population.
The area around the tunnel has been deemed unsafe until further investigation and mitigation efforts are complete.
