Five juveniles have been charged following a dangerous pursuit through Pittsburgh streets, which resulted in a police officer sustaining moderate head injuries. The incident occurred last Saturday when the police received reports of stolen vehicles, according to WPXI.
Officials said the group, consisting of three boys and two girls, engaged in a sequence of reckless acts, starting with snatching a vehicle from Zone 6 and making a clamorous entry into Zone 1. While law enforcement attempted to handle the situation near Federal Street and Lafayette Avenue, the juveniles abruptly honked their horns, with masked faces inside the cars. Ultimately, one of the suspected vehicles collided with one of the officers as they were exiting their patrol car, as Audacy reported. The injured officer, despite the moderate head injuries, drove themselves to a hospital for treatment.
The chase continued, with Pittsburgh Police deploying spike strips near the 10th Street Bridge in an attempt to halt the escape. Nevertheless, the suspects' vehicle persevered, heading towards downtown where, at Boulevard of the Allies and Grant Street, multiple individuals abandoned the car. There, officers managed to apprehend four suspects while one remains at large.
Later on, police discovered an abandoned vehicle on Brutus Way in Sheraden, which matched the second suspect vehicle's description. "No suspects were located at the scene, and the car was towed for processing," according to WPXI. The juvenile offenders face felony and misdemeanor charges related to the incident, including fleeing or attempting to elude police, receiving stolen property, reckless endangerment, and causing property damage. Importantly, none are presently being charged as adults under Act 33, which could allow for such in the case of suspects aged 15 or older.
Pittsburgh Police are diligently continuing their investigation into this situation to ensure all those involved are held accountable.
