In a straightforward move to enhance outdoor recreational opportunities, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has announced that Fontana-on-Geneva-Lake is eyeing a grant to grow its Hildebrand Conservancy by about 0.4 acres. The village seeks to secure funds through the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program, aiming for a grant that would cover half the cost of this land acquisition. According to the DNR's news release, the expansion's purpose is to boost activities such as fishing, bird watching, and various winter sports, catering to those who enjoy Wisconsin's natural beauty.
Residents of the quaint Walworth County village would find added space to engage in fishing, hiking, snowshoeing, and other nature-related enjoyments. The area is not only picturesque but also practical, with plans for recreational activities that take into account the changing seasons of the Midwest. While the intent is to enhance public enjoyment of the outdoors, the DNR has indicated that hunting and trapping would not be permissible on this new parcel. The proposed restrictions aim to ensure the safety of nearby residents, schools, and other local structures, injecting an extra degree of caution in consideration of the land’s surroundings.
The DNR has made available an initial assessment of the permitted activities, inviting public insight into the planning process. Those interested can access the full document on the Stewardship Public Notice webpage, or contact Grace Mikelsons at the Wisconsin DNR for a copy via email.
