The ripple effects of the federal government shutdown have now hit low-income families and individuals as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and the Minnesota Family Investment Program (MFIP) announce halted food benefits for November. According to Ramsey County's latest update, the programs await the conclusion of the shutdown or further direction from the feds before they can resume providing crucial assistance. The cash portion of MFIP, however, will continue to be disbursed.
For those currently enrolled in SNAP and MFIP, the county's message is simple: use the benefits you possess and stay reachable. "Continue to use them," the county advises, while emphasizing the importance of keeping contact details current. Families relying on this aid might face a grim November if an agreement isn't reached in the corridors of power where these decisions are made.
The county is still accepting new applications for SNAP and MFIP and is processing those received, but they're dealing with the cards they're holding; for applicants, this means no promises of receiving benefits by November 1st if the shutdown persists. Ramsey County encourages applying now to ensure cases are "ready to move forward quickly once the program restarts."
