In a concerted effort to maintain the aesthetics and health of urban spaces, the City of Fort Worth has recently made significant strides in its clean-up initiatives. With a confluence of service departments, community partnerships, and an armada of volunteers, the city managed to rid its streets and green spaces of over 18.6 million pounds of unsightly and potentially hazardous litter and debris in the last fiscal year, per the City of Fort Worth.

Specifically, the collaboration has managed to successfully clear 6,776 illegal dumpsites and 2,496 illegal campsites, presenting a cleaner urban tableau for both residents and visitors alike to safely enjoy. As part of this clean-up crusade, 76,807 curb miles of city streets have been swept, an achievement made possible by an expanded fleet of 12 street sweepers. Despite the perceived banality of maintenance work, this mechanical ballet was instrumental in keeping communal spaces pristine. The Environmental Services Department intends to further bolster these efforts by adding five new UpSpire crews to tackle illegal campsite cleanups in the next fiscal year.

The tireless work of over 7,700 volunteers shouldn't go unnoticed; their collective contribution clocked up over 31,000 hours of labor to remove approximately 208,000 pounds of litter citywide, according to the city's data. Their actions were part of a broader Keep Fort Worth Beautiful (KFWB) initiative, which orchestrated community-wide cleanup events like the Neighborhood Litter Stomp and the Cowtown Great American Cleanup. Looking forward, additional programs such as Adopt-A-Spot and School Green Teams are set to continue into FY26, further galvanizing community engagement in environmental stewardship.

And with the 2026 FIFA World Cup on the horizon, city departments are gearing up to not only continue, but also to intensify their litter control efforts to uphold Fort Worth's commitment to being a clean and attractive destination. It is a partnership between Environmental Services and Park & Recreation that will spearhead these actions, working alongside the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and other entities to maximize the effectiveness of the cleanup operations.
