A 45-year-old fugitive, Juan Pablo Acosta, wanted on approximately 30 sexual assault warrants, has been captured in Canada and returned to face justice in Texas. Acosta, previously a Buda resident, was extradited on October 29, after officers of the Canadian law enforcement arrested him on unrelated charges, as CBS Austin reported.
His legal troubles began in April 2021 when Buda police arrested him on charges including two second-degree felony sexual assault counts. After bonding out from Hays County Jail, Acosta skipped bail and fled, becoming a fugitive. Information later emerged that he had been living in Toronto, prompting the involvement of the Hays County Sheriff's Office Special Services Division and the U.S. Marshals Service, necessitating a collaborative effort across borders for his extradition, KXAN reports.
The Hays County Sheriff's Office, in its announcement, underscored the complexity of the operation, detailing how extradition required the sign-off from the United States, Mexican, and Canadian federal courts. The successful culmination of this intricate legal process has now resulted in Acosta being held without bond at the Hays County Jail, where he awaits the progression of his case.
"During the investigation, information was discovered Acosta was residing in Toronto, Canada," HCSO said, according to KXAN. Acosta's return stateside was overseen by the U.S. Marshals, who, according to court records, ensured Acosta was securely transported and handed over to the Texan authorities. The capture and extradition mark a significant point in this international fugitive case, bringing an individual facing serious charges back to answer to the justice system.
