Gatlinburg honored its veteran employees with some well-deserved recognition at the second annual Mark McCown Veterans Appreciation Luncheon, held last Thursday at the Gatlinburg Golf Course. In a showing of support ahead of Veterans Day, the luncheon tipped its hat to the City's employees who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, recognizing their sacrifices and enduring dedication to both the nation and the community, as reported by Gatlinburg's official website.

The event opened with an invocation by Gatlinburg Police Department Chaplain Brian Huff and the Gatlinburg Police Department Honor Guard's presentation of the colors setting a respectful tone, GPD Officer Daniel Powers performed the National Anthem and Public Works Director Roger Sims led the Pledge of Allegiance, setting the stage for a poignant tribute to service and sacrifice. Gatlinburg City Manager Greg Patterson expressed his deep appreciation for the veteran employees, stating, "This luncheon was a great event to honor the men and women of Gatlinburg’s workforce who have worn the uniform and served our country with distinction,” and acknowledging the unique spirit of commitment they bring to the municipal workforce.

Sevier County Sheriff Michael Hodges, a nine-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force Security Forces with deployments to Saudi Arabia and South Korea under his belt, served as the event's keynote speaker. His military experience and resulting insights provided a resonating voice for the importance of the occasion.

In what was a heartfelt addition to the luncheon, the City presented a Quilt of Honor to Bud Franklin, a venerable figure within Gatlinburg's Utilities and Fire Department, Bud received this handmade token of appreciation from Gatlinburg Police Department Secretary Wanda Tippie in recognition of his notable service in the U.S. Army and his enduring commitment to the city that came after his tenure in the military, which included a significant stint stationed in the 31st Medical Group Field Hospital in Germany. Patterson lauded the gesture by saying, “Honoring Bud Franklin’s military service and his service to our City is a fitting tribute,” capturing the gratitude rippling through the community for Franklin's twin legacies of military and civic service.
