In an effort to support domestic violence victims in Genesee County, Sheriff Chris Swanson has announced a significant change to how personal protection orders (PPOs) are handled. As reported by CBS News Detroit, starting immediately, the Sheriff's Office will cover the service fees associated with PPOs for those who are financially unable to afford them.
The cost to have a PPO served should never be a barrier to keeping a person safe from a domestic situation, Swanson said. This intervention by the Sheriff’s Office preempts the ongoing legislative efforts that seek to eliminate such fees statewide, as legislation often requires time to be passed and implemented. In an announcement, Sheriff Swanson emphasized, “Effective immediately, if you have a PPO that’s been authorized by the court and you do not have the financial means to pay for that service, you just can’t afford it, do not let that stop you,” as conveyed by CBS News Detroit.
Individuals in need of this service can approach the Sheriff's Office on South Saginaw Street to speak with a deputy or detective who will serve the order. Furthermore, the recent state budget signed by Governor Gretchen Whitmer includes a $162.3 million allocation for crime victim services, including domestic violence prevention and support for survivors.
The Sheriff's proactive stance not only addresses immediate needs but also offers a potential model for statewide reform. In a video posted on Facebook, Swanson stated, "We will protect you and we won't let finances be a barrier," which was documented by ABC12. For information on how to acquire a PPO in Genesee County, individuals can call the personal protection order office. Moreover, in case of emergency and immediate assistance, domestic violence victims are urged to call 911 or the YWCA crisis line, which is available 24/7.
