The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has rolled up its sleeves to kick off the preliminary work for replacing the bridge along Freemanville Road over Cooper Sandy Creek. Making way for progress, the crews have started the groundwork, embarking on a project that seems long overdue.
This bridge replacement project comes after years of review by the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), which regularly inspects bridges across the state. The Freemanville Bridge—located between Providence Road and Landrum Road—was identified some time ago as needing major repairs, according to a recent update from the City of Milton.
When the project shifts from planning to execution, residents can expect to see some tangible changes to their daily commutes. The soon-to-be-demolished bridge will lay the groundwork for a new thoroughfare, one comprising an 11-foot lane in each direction, along with shoulders and a projected multiuse path on one side. The replacement process will impose a lengthy detour on local commuters, stretching several months, but officials are laying the groundwork for this inconvenience with ample signage to navigate the changes.
Pre-construction activities are currently shaping the half-mile work zone, as crews diligently clear trees, extract roots, and uproot stumps. They are also busy moving utilities to pave the way for the heavy lifting to come next. This fall marks just the beginning, with road crews expected to cause minor disruptions to traffic between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. on weekdays, so prepare for some extra wait time, and occasional, traffic delays.
The City of Milton plans to keep its citizens in the loop, with up-to-date information on when the next phase will hit full swing, and what that means for road closures. To stay informed about the upcoming detours or any other project-related advisories, the City encourages residents to tune in to their Facebook page or to sign-up for Road Closure text alerts at www.miltonga.gov/Notifications, or emails at www.miltonga.gov/Emails.
