Germantown's annual initiative to school its kids on fire safety has wrapped up another chapter, and this year's theme might just be its most modern yet. Adhering to the National Fire Protection Association's focus on lithium-ion battery safety, Germantown Fire Department's firefighters donned vibrant costumes and showcased Minecraft-themed skits at local schools throughout Fire Prevention Week. The aim was as evergreen as they come: to educate the young ones on fire hazards and safety with an added pixelated twist. Mayor Mike sang their praises in his latest "Mayor's Minute," detailing the troupe's effort to make safety lessons stick by infusing them with a dose of humor, as per the city's announcement.
In a statement obtained by the city' website, the theaters to learning were brought to eight different Germantown schools, sometimes delivering multiple shows a day. In these creative performances, children learned about safe charging habits, the significance of smoke detectors, and the ins and outs of E.D.I.T.H. (Exit Drills In The Home)—critical lessons aimed to resonate long after the laughter subsides. The vibrant educational experience they created is available for all to see on the Germantown Fire Department's Facebook page.
The scripting and execution of such an engaging program is no rookie feat. The LAFS team, boasting nearly two decades worth of experience, took home the title of Fire Educator of the Year back in 2014, courtesy of the Tennessee State Fire Marshal’s Office. This is but a glimpse into their track record of theatrical spectacles that marry fun with function, with past renditions drawing inspiration from Toy Story, Mario Bros., and Ghostbusters, among others. Mayor Mike emphasized that it's the heartfelt commitment of these firefighters, who dedicate their personal time, planning and rehearsing, which truly elevates the educational outreach efforts.
The Germantown Fire Department's approach—extending beyond mere emergency response—encompasses a dedication to public service that is as instructive as it is compassionate. "Their dedication is a perfect example of what public service in Germantown looks like: skilled professionals using every tool, including humor, to keep our community safe," Mayor Mike told Mayor's Minute, as mentioned on the city's website. The Mayor expressed his gratitude for the firefighters' impact on young residents.
