Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has announced several transportation projects aimed at reducing congestion in Central Florida, including new express lanes on Interstate 4 and the nation’s first infrastructure for Advanced Air Mobility (AAM). The announcement outlines major infrastructure investments expected to begin in the coming years.
According to the Governor’s office website, the plans include adding 17 miles of express lanes along I-4 in Hillsborough County and building a 100-space truck parking facility in Polk County. The express lanes are intended to separate long-distance traffic from local commuters, improving travel reliability. Construction on the express lanes is scheduled to begin in 2028, nearly a decade earlier than originally planned.
Florida Department of Transportation Secretary Jared W. Perdue stated that the projects are part of ongoing efforts to relieve congestion and improve traffic flow across the state.
The new truck parking facility will be located at the Polk Parkway and I-4 interchange, using existing right-of-way to support the freight industry, which moves about 75 percent of Florida’s goods.
In addition, Florida will begin developing infrastructure for AAM, including commercial vertiports at FDOT’s SunTrax testing facility. The first of two vertiports is already under construction, marking the start of a potential statewide network for advanced air transport.
