A Pennsylvania man, Cody Balmer, has pleaded guilty to a series of charges after an arson attack on the governor's mansion, where Governor Josh Shapiro and his family were asleep. According to WPXI, the 38-year-old scaled an iron security fence and launched Molotov cocktails in an attempt to ignite the building, resulting in millions of dollars in damage.
Under a plea agreement, Balmer faced 25 to 50 years in prison on charges that included attempted murder, terrorism, and multiple counts of arson. His criminal actions occurred shortly after the Shapiro family celebrated the Jewish holiday of Passover, as WPXI detailed. Despite the potential for tragedy, including the numerous guests and state troopers present, there were no injuries reported as a figure broke in through the southern wing of the residence, seen on video clips that Judge Deborah Curcillo described as "very frightening."
Recovered from the historic residence, which lacked sprinklers, were two broken glass beer bottles filled with gasoline, among several other items damaged by the blaze. As WTAE reported, the attack has raised questions about Balmer's motives, which remain unclear despite his attack occurring over a religious holiday weekend. In a letter from jail, Balmer wrote, "He can be Jewish, Muslim, or a purple people eater for all I care and as long as he leaves me and mine alone."
Efforts are currently in progress to repair the governors’ mansion and strengthen its security, as steps are taken to restore a sense of safety and normalcy.
