In Hamblen County, a fraudulent scheme involving the attempted sale of a tractor that wasn't owned by the seller has come to light. According to WVLT, the suspect, Jason Robert Blair, posted a listing on Facebook Marketplace under the guise of "Angela Dawn Benz." The owner of the tractor stumbled upon the listing and reported the false advertisement after finding their Kubota tractor listed for $30,000. Officials, including Sheriff Chad Mullins and Detective Lieutenant Jim Brooks, set up a sting operation, posing as potential buyers to apprehend Blair.

Before the arranged meeting with the suspect, law enforcement observed a man entering the field and subsequently captured an image of a white Chevy Silverado truck leaving the site where the tractor was initially found, as stated in a report by WBIR. Leveraging digital evidence, investigators were able to confirm Blair as the suspect behind the online alias and issued an arrest warrant for charges of criminal impersonation and attempted theft by deception.

Blair was subsequently apprehended on Monday afternoon, according to HCSO Sheriff Chad Mullins, who highlighted the importance of exercising caution with online transactions. "It is important to always meet in a public, well-lit location and to verify the legitimacy of listings before transferring money or personal information," Mullins told WVLT. This incident serves as a reminder of the increasingly clever tactics scammers employ to deceive unsuspecting victims.

Online scams are not uncommon in the region, with a victim previously losing $26,000 in an attempt to buy a car online, as highlighted by a report from WATE. The local community is urged to stay vigilant and verify any online deals carefully. With scammers finding new ways to exploit digital marketplaces, the consequences of falling prey to such schemes can be significant both financially and emotionally for the victims involved.
