
The Hawai'i Department of Transportation (HDOT) is taking action to fortify three Upcountry bridges against potential earthquakes, and they are seeking the public's input on this project. A meeting has been announced where members of the community can learn more about the proposed structural improvements for the ʻAlae Bridge, Pōhakuokalā Bridge, and Waiʻale Bridge located in Kula. Interested individuals are encouraged to attend the session scheduled for October 14, at 6 p.m. in the King Kekaulike High School cafeteria, as reported by HDOT.
During the upgrade process, which is still in the stages of environmental analysis and preparatory engineering, road users should anticipate disruptions. These will include single-lane closures and full bridge shutdowns, though not simultaneously, to help ease the congestion. This might cause work will be staggered to help manage traffic flow more effectively.
HDOT's initiative aims to significantly enhance the resilience of these critical infrastructure components in the face of seismic events. As island geography makes the stability of transport links crucial not only for daily commuting but also for emergency responses and economic continuity. The department has detailed that construction is slated to commence in August of 2026 with a projected end date in January 2028, indicating a thoughtful planning period meant to mitigate the impact on local residents and travelers to the greatest extent possible.
