The Healey-Driscoll administration, in conjunction with the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative's Massachusetts Broadband Institute (MBI), has rolled out an ambitious $23 million initiative targeting the digital device gap in Massachusetts. Dubbed the Connected and Online Program, this push will set forth to distribute an impressive tally of around 27,000 internet-ready devices to qualifying organizations statewide, as per a Massachusetts state government announcement. The U.S. Treasury Capital Projects Fund is the financial backbone for this endeavor, which falls under the state's larger strategy to empower digital inclusion.
The beneficiaries of the program will witness an array of technology—laptops, tablets, desktop computers, and other assistive devices—come into their libraries, municipal offices, and educational institutions. Each recipient will bear the tag of being an approved applicant, chosen based on their plans for public accessibility, like through lending programs or on-site usage. It was stated by Governor Maura Healey, "Access to the internet is no longer a luxury – it's a necessity for work, learning and health." Her words echo the administration's commitment to providing the necessary digital tools to communities throughout the Commonwealth.
Moreover, organizations are required to pitch in with a solid plan to measure usage and track outcomes, ensuring that these investments turn into actual gains—be it in education, job applications, or health monitoring. Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll added in support, "These devices will help families access telehealth, students complete their homework, and job seekers apply for new opportunities."
The Connected and Online Program's application window is slim—the cut-off date being Friday, Nov. 7. Detailed information and the application form can be reached through MBI's website, nudging municipalities, libraries, health care providers, workforce centers, educational institutions and nonprofits towards an opportunity to bridge the digital gap. As outlined on their website, MBI's broader mission involves leveraging state and federal funds to expand high-speed internet access and availability in Massachusetts, acknowledging the pivotal role of such initiatives in today's digitally-driven economy.
