The Hawaiʻi Police Department's Hilo Community Policing Section recently marked a day of safety and sportsmanship, providing over 200 Keiki Identification cards during a statewide youth baseball tournament. This initiative took place at the Walter Victor Baseball Complex in Hilo on October 3, where officers engaged with young players and their families. As reported by a Hawaiʻi Police Department release, the turnout included 34 teams from across Hawaiʻi.
These ID cards are a critical tool in ensuring the safety of Hawaii's youth, serving as an immediate resource for identification in case of an emergency. The success of the event is shared with community partners like Gigi Napoleon, who invited the police to participate, and the County of Hawaiʻi Department of Parks and Recreation, for providing space for the Keiki ID booth.
Not solely confined to special events, the Hilo Community Policing Section regularly collaborates with local institutions to provide these essential services. According to the same police release, they've earmarked a future date for the next Keiki ID initiative; this one in partnership with the Hilo Public Library. Scheduled for mid-December – the precise date and time yet to be confirmed.
For those interested in taking advantage of this community service, the Hawaiʻi Police Department encourages the public to stay informed. Details regarding upcoming Keiki ID events are updated regularly on their website under the “Events” page. Here, parents can also find additional resources and information on how to protect their keiki in various situations.
