The streets of Holyoke witnessed a significant drug bust as police officers arrested two suspects and confiscated a large quantity of crack-cocaine and heroin/fentanyl, the Holyoke Police Department said yesterday. In a social media post, Police Chief Brian Keenan outlined the seizure that took place the previous evening, around 7:40 p.m.
Officers Johnathan Ortiz, James Kennedy, and Matthew Cayer responded to a report of a threat involving a firearm at Farnum Drive, during their investigation Officer Joshua Rivera noticed the suspect vehicle stationed at a gas station on the corner of Whiting Farms Road and Lower Westfield Road, he, together with Officers Nigel Astwood and others, moved in for support. The vehicle's three occupants faced scrutiny, and while the female driver was eventually released, the passengers were not so fortunate, with Joel Vazquez being the central figure of the initial complaint.
An open liquor bottle and crack pipe set the scene for the vehicle search, which revealed Vazquez was carrying a knife, but the deeper probe yielded more telltale signs of trafficking—162 grams of what is believed to be crack-cocaine, 46 strips of suboxone, and over 100 bags of suspected heroin/fentanyl were found inside a satchel, along with more than $400 in cash. Vazquez, who is no stranger to the criminal justice system with prior drug distribution convictions, was promptly arrested, according to the Holyoke Police Department's Facebook Post.
Alongside Vazquez, the second passenger Manuel Gantt was also apprehended based on outstanding arrest warrants, including one extraditable from Connecticut. The charges are severe, with 27-year-old Vazquez facing allegations including cocaine trafficking and multiple counts of possession with the intent to distribute, while 33-year-old Gantt confronts warrants that have been haunting him for a while.
