Honolulu residents and visitors alike had the opportunity to zip through the city this weekend without the need to reach for their wallets. As reported by Honolulu.gov, the City and County of Honolulu's Department of Transportation Services (DTS) offered a fare-free weekend for the newly opened Segment 2 of Skyline, in addition to TheBus and Handi-Van services. This move came as a celebration of expanded public transport options, making commutes and exploration more accessible for the community.
Patrons taking advantage of the deal were required to possess a HOLO card to tap at station gates or while boarding TheBus. However, they were assured that "no fare will be deducted" while using their card during the specified times today and tomorrow, according to Honolulu.gov. Handi-Van rides were also part of the deal. Cards could be easily obtained from a variety of locations, albeit costing $2, and needing a minimum balance if purchased from Skyline Ticket Vending Machines.
A substantial turnout was anticipated by the DTS, prompting them to request that patrons adhere to certain courtesy and safety guidelines. Among these directives, as outlined on the city’s official website, commuters were reminded to maintain close supervision of children, secure themselves with provided grab-bars and hand-straps during transport, and to be vigilant in terms of elevator and boarding etiquette. These precautions aimed to ensure a smooth and safe experience for all during the busy promotional period.
DTS specifically emphasized the importance of tapping the HOLO cards on the blue reader pad to seamlessly enter and exit and advised riders with extra cargo, such as bikes or strollers, to use the ADA/wide gates. The city’s announcement highlighted, "Never block train doors or platform gates. Doing so causes systemwide delays." Also, the doors of the trains stayed open for about 30 seconds, so being prepared to board or exit promptly was suggested to keep the flow of passengers steady.
For those who missed the free rides, obtaining a HOLO card remains a practical choice for future transit. The card can be used across Skyline, TheBus, and Handi-Van services, streamlining payment and making it easier for residents and tourists alike to navigate the beautiful city of Honolulu. More information on the services, including fare details and points of purchase for the HOLO card, can be found on the city’s official transportation page.
