Tomorrow, the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) and Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT) are set to officially brand the I-55 Bridge spanning the Mississippi River as Kings’ Crossing. According to the Tennessee Department of Transportation, the moniker pays homage to three iconic figures: blues legend B.B. King, civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and the king of rock 'n' roll, Elvis Presley. The dedication is part of a ceremony to remember these influential individuals and educate attendees on the forthcoming bridge replacement project.
The event commencing at 10:00 AM CT on Beale Street Landing in Memphis marks a significant moment in Tennessee's infrastructure history. It's anticipated that local, state, and federal representatives will be present, alongside the TDOT Commissioner, Will Reid, and ARDOT Director, Jared Wiley. Noteworthy guests slated to speak include Vassal Benford, chair of the B.B. King Estate, and Jack Soden, CEO of Elvis Presley Enterprises. Special arrangements have been made to accommodate media attendance, with designated parking and a shuttle service to ferry between the lot and the event location.
Memphis, a city revered for its rich cultural tapestry, seems an apt locale to merge these storied personalities into a physical landmark. Each "King" has played a pivotal role in shaping the cultural and social narrative of the region, across music, societal movement, and universal folklore. Celebrating their legacies through the communal experience of a bridge suggests an underlying acknowledgment that, while each crossed different barriers, they collectively charted paths for others to follow.
