As the leaves turn and the days shorten, one issue that can't be overlooked is the safety of those who traverse the thoroughfares on foot. The Irving Police Department has taken to social media to underscore the importance of pedestrian safety during what they have declared National Pedestrian Safety Month. In a recent post, they've laid out some critical guidelines for keeping streets safe for everyone.
In the post, the Irving Police Department emphasized the collective responsibility that walkers, bikers, and drivers share in maintaining safety. "Whether you're walking, biking, or driving, we all share the responsibility of keeping our roads safe," the post reads. Among the recommendations, they advise individuals to slow down in pedestrian areas, always yield at crosswalks, and stay alert with phones down and eyes up. With the coming of nightfall, being visible becomes paramount, and the department has not shied away from stressing this point.
This initiative isn't simply a matter of authority figures dictating rules but a community-wide call to action. The consequences of inattention on the roads can be severe, disproportionately affecting the most vulnerable among us. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2019, a pedestrian was killed every 85 minutes in traffic crashes in the United States. The police department aims to significantly reduce these sobering statistics.
