The National Weather Service in Jacksonville, FL has extended multiple advisories for the local area, including a Coastal Flood Warning, a High Surf Advisory, and a High Rip Current Risk through the coming days. According to the latest updates, those situated in Coastal Duval, Coastal Flagler, Northeast Coastal St. Johns, and Southeast Coastal St. Johns Counties should brace for significant coastal flooding, particularly around high tide times.
In addition to flooding concerns, large breaking waves of 5 to 7 feet are expected, posing risks for beachgoers and property along the shore. Moreover, NWS Jacksonville warned of dangerous rip currents that can "sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water." Residents and visitors have been urged to adhere to safety precautions, and not to drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth.
As for the weather outlook, the forecast anticipates a mix of thunderstorms and showers across the area for several days. While today might see a 40% chance of precipitation, Sunday expects a jump to 70%, with showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm. The consistent breeze, gusting as high as 30 mph at times, could compound the area's challenges, especially considering the already heightened surf conditions.
The impact of these conditions will likely see numerous roads closing, and properties, including homes and businesses, could face inundation. Local authorities are keeping a close eye on critical infrastructure at risk of flooding. With the High Rip Current Risk now in effect through late Monday night, swimmers are advised to "swim near a lifeguard" and "if caught in a rip current, relax and float," as stated by NWS Jacksonville. Swimmers should not swim against the current, and if possible, swim parallel to the shoreline before calling or signaling for help if needed.
Continued advisories have prompted a community-wide call for preparedness and caution as the area navigates the temperamental weather patterns and the associated hazards on land and sea. The community is recommended to stay informed on the latest weather updates and heed the advice of local authorities to ensure safety during this period of environmental tumult.
