Jacksonville resident and registered child sex offender Sean-Michael Smith, age 36, has been sentenced to a decade in federal prison following his attempt to obtain child sexual abuse materials online. In a report from the U.S. Attorney's Office, Middle District of Florida, Smith was detailed to have pleaded guilty on June 11, to the charges against him. According to the Department of Justice, Chief U.S. District Judge Marcia Morales Howard also imposed a supervised release period of 15 years following Smith’s incarceration and ordered the forfeiture of his computer device.

Smith's history as a sex offender dates back to 2014 when he was convicted for distributing sexually abusive imagery of minors. He was arrested on December 18, 2024, and soon after admitted to having sketched nude children and to have used the internet multiple times to access such materials. A search conducted by U.S. Probation Officers on December 10, 2024, led to the seizure of an electronic device which Smith confessed to using in order to find the abusive content. The Federal Bureau of Investigation in Jacksonville was able to eventually extract data from the device's computer chip, finding at least 35 photos showing the abuse of young children.

The investigation into Smith's activities formed part of Project Safe Childhood, an initiative by the Department of Justice begun in 2006 to aggressively tackle child sexual exploitation and abuse across the country. This project aligns efforts from various levels of law enforcement to secure arrests and support affected children by seeking justice for their exploitation.

Assistant United States Attorney D. Rodney Brown of the U.S. Attorney's Office was highlighted as the prosecutor in Smith’s case.
