The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has issued a warning to motorists regarding the concealment or alteration of vehicle license plates. Under Florida Statute 320.061, which took effect on Wednesday last week, stricter penalties are now in place for tampering with or obscuring registration plates. The offense is classified as a second-degree misdemeanor and may carry additional charges if connected to other criminal activity.
According to a statement from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office's Facebook page, some drivers have used tinted covers, altered plates, or devices designed to block toll and traffic cameras. The agency stated that such practices are illegal and will be actively enforced. The law requires that all license plates remain fully visible and unobstructed at all times.
The public is reminded that tampering with license plates is not a minor violation but a criminal offense. Officials encouraged drivers to comply with state regulations to avoid fines or charges and ensure vehicle identification remains clear and readable.
