The Johnson City Police Department (JCPD) and the Johnson City Fire Department (JCFD) are uniting to offer timely advice that promises a fun, and more importantly, safe Halloween experience, according to a recent announcement.
In the spirit of prevention, JCFD Fire Marshal Steve Alexander emphasizes the importance of taking straightforward yet effective measures. "Between flickering decorations, excited kids, and dark streets, Halloween can get hectic fast," he explained. Alexander advises alternatives to open flames, like opting for battery-powered candles or glow sticks in jack-o’-lanterns and other decorations to avert possible emergencies. Moreover, the fire department advocates for residents to ensure smoke alarms are in working order before the festivities begin, and to keep decorations clear of heat sources and walkways free of hazards.
Equally, the JCPD underscores the need for mindful planning especially when it comes to costume choices and trick-or-treating strategies. Operations Maj. Eric Dougherty from the JCPD said, "We love seeing creative costumes and spooky decorations, but safety should always be part of the plan." He also urged drivers to practice extra caution and to stay vigilant for the presence of children on the roads.
The police department doesn't stop with costume advice. Additionally, safe trick-or-treating is advised by visiting known neighborhoods and homes, group activities or adult supervision, and keeping an eye out for anything amiss, "If you see something suspicious, call 911," urged the JCPD. For adults partaking in Halloween revelry, the wise choice is to abstain from driving if alcohol is involved; suggesting the appointment of a designated driver, or the utilization of a cab or ride service. In support of these measures, the department is increasing patrols on Halloween night to ensure community safety.
