Portland Bureau of Transportation is asking residents to adopt storm drains to help prevent street flooding during bad weather. “Portland’s storm drains help with stormwater runoff and prevent flooding,” Portland Bureau of Transportation said, adding that more than 58,000 drains across the city need to be kept clear.

Residents are advised to clear debris with basic tools, wear reflective clothing, and clean about 10 feet on both sides of the drain. Drains that stay clogged after debris is removed should be reported online, by calling the 24/7 maintenance line, or by emailing [email protected], as stated by the Portland Bureau of Transportation.

According to the Portland Bureau of Transportation on their Facebook page, Portland residents are working with Portland Bureau of Transportation to clear storm drains as part of a flood-prevention effort. People are “adopting” drains near their homes and posting updates with @pbotinfo on social media to show the work and encourage participation. Portland Bureau of Transportation has acknowledged residents taking part in this effort, which supports the city’s response to potential flooding.
