Joel Smith, convicted of sexually abusing a young boy in the Kansas City area, has been sentenced to 25 years in a Missouri correctional facility. According to the Office of the Governor, Judge Josh Taylor issued the sentence following statements from the victim’s family detailing the lasting impact of Smith’s actions.

Spanning two years of legal proceedings, Smith, who abused a five-year-old child, was sentenced based on evidence presented by the Attorney General’s office and the work of Special Prosecutors Tristin M. Estep and Jeff Suddy, Jr., along with victim advocate Carrie Boessen and investigator Rob Jauer.

"This sentence sends a clear message that Missouri will not tolerate those who prey on our children," Attorney General Hanaway said in a press release, noting the state's stance against such acts. The prosecution's role also included informing the community and other victims about the legal outcomes in this case.

Gregg Goodwin, Chief Counsel of the Public Protection Section, noted that the 25-year sentence reflects the severity of the crime and the strength of the evidence. The Attorney General’s office stated that the team’s work focuses on holding offenders accountable and protecting Missouri’s youth.
