The Kauaʻi Bus has introduced the Open Payments system, letting passengers pay fares using contactless credit or debit cards and mobile wallets. This follows the earlier rollout of mobile ticketing in January and the Holomua smartcard in May, according to the County of Kauai.
The Kauaʻi Bus has launched the Open Payments system, allowing riders to tap and go, with fares automatically capped for daily and monthly limits. Riders can link their payment cards to a single account to use reduced fares, view trip histories, and access other features. Adult single mainline rides cost $2.00, with lower rates for reduced fares. Mayor Derek S. K. Kawakami said, "This latest launch makes riding The Kauaʻi Bus easier than ever, whether you are a local commuter or a visitor exploring the island," as reported by the County of Kauai.
Account Linking now lets travelers avoid overpaying with a fare capping policy that ensures the lowest fare. As Masabi CEO Brian Zanghi said, "This rollout is about more than technology. It is about making public transit more accessible, efficient, and rider-friendly for residents and visitors alike." The system, powered by Masabi’s Justride platform, is used by many transit agencies. Riders can still manage accounts or get a Holomua smartcard at the Kauaʻi Bus office, or use a contactless card or mobile wallet to tap on any Kauaʻi Bus, as stated by the County of Kauai.
