The streets of Kaua‘i are set to become playgrounds for its residents, with the Office of Economic Development (OED) and various local agencies launching a toolkit to help communities host their own car-free events. According to a statement obtained by the County’s official press release, the Play Streets Community Toolkit offers a comprehensive guide on how neighbors can transform parts of their streets into venues for play and socializing.

This initiative aims to foster a stronger, more vibrant community by encouraging physical activity and connection in a safe space. Mayor Derek S. K. Kawakami emphasized the grassroots spirit of the project, "Play Streets are about reclaiming our neighborhoods as safe, vibrant spaces where families can come together." The toolkit comes complete with a checklist and practical advice to smoothly bring these events to life, as mentioned on the county's website.

From permit applications to an inventory of available games and equipment for lending, the toolkit serves as an essential resource for anyone interested in setting up a Play Street event. It even features guidelines for volunteers and tips on how to engage different age groups in physical activity. As Nalani Brun, Director of the OED, told the county press, "By empowering residents to take the lead, we're fostering healthier, more connected neighborhoods across Kaua‘i."

The toolkit was a collaborative effort and highlights a growing trend towards utilizing public spaces for community health benefits. Ka‘aina Hull, the Director of the County’s Planning Department, noted that it is indeed a way "to bring neighbors together, support keiki health, and make our streets welcoming for everyone."

The county is encouraging schools, businesses, and community groups to use the Play Streets toolkit for local projects. The next chance to see Play Streets in action is at the Rice Street Block Party on October 25. Anyone needing assistance or accommodations can request help in advance through the contact details in the official announcement.
