There's a fresh start over in Kauai for old pipes, as the Department of Water (DOW), Contractor Alpha Inc., and Construction Manager Bowers + Kubota came together for a little pomp on October 3, honoring the kick-off of the Kūhiō Highway (Hardy-Oxford) Waterline Project. Holding to tradition, the event was more than a formality; it was about investing in a future where water—life's most essential molecule—continues its flow unimpeded by time's wear on metal and stone.

With a chant and a prayer, Kahu Jade Waialeale Battad kicked off the ceremony. Joining her were a mix of county officials and water supply board members, including State Representative Luke Evslin and DOW's own Manager and Chief Engineer, Joe Tait. According to the County of Kauai, the DOW shared Joe Tait’s sentiments: "This was indeed a glorious event.  We extend our sincere gratitude to our supportive board members and elected officials for joining us.  As we move forward with this vital project, we remain committed to keeping our community informed, while working diligently to minimize any unnecessary disruptions,"

The nitty-gritty of this waterline facelift talks about replacing aging infrastructure, complying with up-to-date Water System Standards—those important little benchmarks that keep faucets flowing and hydrants ready in times of fire. It's a two-part tango, first slotted for October and then a second phase in December, targeting the vital veins along Kūhiō Highway between Hardy and Oxford streets, with a sidebar of work on Poinciana Street stretching from the highway to Jerves Street.
