The closure of Lake City's Fred Meyer has been confirmed, prompting concern from local residents and Representative Farivar, who grew up nearby. Rep. Farivar said, "this hits close to home," noting the challenges low-income families and people of color will face in accessing fresh groceries, according to the Washington State House Democrats.
Legislative efforts like SB 5525 aim to protect workers with a 60-day notice and retraining support, though Fred Meyer employees will be relocated to other stores. Last year, Washington lawmakers allocated $128 million for food security, including emergency food support, mobile markets, and protections for families on TANF, addressing food access in underserved communities, as reported by the Washington State House Democrats.
Representative Farivar is preparing for the 2026 legislative session with bills like HB 1987, which would create a statewide food security plan focused on equitable access and climate resilience. He said, "we have much more to do," noting challenges from federal budget cuts and a possible government shutdown. Farivar is also planning legislation to attract grocery stores to underserved areas with incentives like tax relief, aiming to replace the Fred Meyer store that closed in Lake City. He said, "It was more than a place to shop – it was where community lived in the ordinary moments we shared," as stated by the Washington State House Democrats.
