Travelers planning to navigate Interstate 15 near Las Vegas will need to brace for disruptions as the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) has announced lane restrictions to make way for critical upgrades. The focus lies on the replacement of weigh-in-motion sensors, technological instruments integral for data collection and the ensuring of safe passage for freight traffic.
Coming into effect next week, these restrictions will squeeze southbound I-15 traffic into a single lane from Las Vegas Blvd (Exit 58) to the Garnet Interchange/US-93 (Exit 64), scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 4, from 5:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The following day, Wednesday, Nov. 5, northbound drivers will catch the same fate during identical hours. The week of closures will culminate on Thursday, Nov. 6, with both directions of I-15 mirroring the single-lane scenario, according to the NDOT schedule.
As reported by NDOT, these sensors are a key component in enabling trucks to be screened at highway speeds. They point out that "Weigh-in-motion sensors enable trucks to be screened at highway speeds, saving drivers time while providing NDOT with critical data to protect pavement and keep freight moving safely along I-15."
NDOT advises motorists to exercise caution in work zones and suggests seeking alternate routes where practical. Weather or unforeseen circumstances may influence the schedule, motorists can stay informed by visiting nvroads.com or calling 511 before embarking on their journeys. For real-time information, NDOT also collaborates with Waze and updates can be accessed on social platforms such as Twitter and Instagram, notably @NevadaDOTVegas for southern Nevada traffic, and @nevadadot for state-wide updates.
