An ongoing investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department's Force Investigation Division is in the works following an officer-involved shooting (OIS) in the Central Division. The incident, which took place at approximately 3:20 p.m. on October 6th, began when an LAPD sergeant observed a shooting in progress at the intersection of 5th Avenue and Main Street. The suspect, 27-year-old Isaiah Gregory Springs, fled the scene with a handgun, leading to a foot chase that culminated in an officer-involved shooting on Spring Street, just south of 4th Street, as reported by the LAPD newsroom.
During the pursuit, Springs managed to avoid being hit by gunfire. However, while armed and fleeing, officers employed 40mm less lethal munitions (LLMs), which succeeded in subduing him. Following his arrest, Springs was subsequently transported to a local hospital for injuries sustained from the LLMs. At the scene of the chase, a handgun was found and has been taken into custody as evidence.
The initial victim of the shooting, whose details are yet to be released, did not survive their injuries. This unfortunate event did not lead to any other community members or officers being harmed. In the wake of the arrest, Springs faces charges for homicide under Section 187(a) of the California Penal Code, as detailed in the official release.
Investigations are now being conducted jointly by the Force Investigation Division (FID) and the Robbery Homicide Division into both the homicide and the circumstances surrounding the officer-involved shooting. While the investigation unfolds, the LAPD's interpretation of the incident remains subject to change, particularly as they collect and analyze additional evidence, review witness statements, and comb through physical and electronic records.
