Las Vegas is preparing for a major addition to its medical sector with the development of a new $44 million medical laboratory. The Nevada Health & Bioscience Corporation (NHBC) announced that the facility will be built next to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) medical school on Shadow Lane. According to News 3 Las Vegas, the two-story, 34,000-square-foot lab will focus on health testing, blood services, and molecular diagnostics for diseases such as tuberculosis.
NHBC Medical Consultant Dr. Barbara Atkinson told FOX5 Vegas that many of Nevada’s blood services are currently processed out of state and noted that the new lab will help address this issue. She also highlighted the addition of a molecular testing lab for tuberculosis as a key feature.
The project is supported by a $35 million grant from the State of Nevada ARPA funds and a $9 million grant from the City of Las Vegas general funds. Dr. Atkinson told News 3 Las Vegas that the new lab will expand educational space for programs in laboratory medicine, hematology, blood banking, and molecular medicine, helping train future medical professionals in the state.
Construction is scheduled to begin in November, with completion expected in late 2026. Sletten Construction, Whiting Turner Contracting Company, and Carpenter Sellers Del Gatto Architects will lead the project.
