
Lawton, Oklahoma observed Indigenous Peoples’ Day with a ceremony at City Hall attended by city officials, tribal representatives, educators, students, and community members. The program included traditional presentations, a color presentation by the KCA Indian Veterans Association, and remarks recognizing Indigenous heritage in the area, according to the City of Lawton.
Dr. Kelly Berry delivered the keynote address, focusing on unity and representation within the community. Dr. Cornel Pewewardy, former Comanche Nation Vice Chairman, moderated the program, emphasizing the role of education in preserving and celebrating Indigenous culture, as reported by the City of Lawton.
During the ceremony, Travis Komahcheet was named Indigenous Man of the Year for his work with Intertribal Visions and his achievements in music. Yolonda Ramos, chair of the KCA Intertribal Land Use Committee, was recognized as Indigenous Woman of the Year. Comanche Academy Charter School was also honored for its contributions to education. City officials ended the event by reaffirming support for the annual observance of Indigenous Peoples’ Day, as stated by the City of Lawton.
