Lawton’s efforts to maintain the cleanliness of its waterways has yielded a full year of success with the Stream Clean Saturday initiative. Marking its one-year anniversary, the community is invited to come together tomorrow, October 18 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Numu Creek, behind the Sheridan Walmart. According to the city's announcement, this event has not just been about picking up trash; it’s been a broader movement towards fostering environmental responsibility among residents.
Across 12 steadfast months, volunteers have managed to collectively remove over 7,000 pounds of debris from streams and creeks—a significant contribution to enhancing the local ecosystem. This Saturday's anniversary will not only celebrate past efforts but also aim to further spark community involvement. The City of Lawton’s Stormwater Management Division has stated that participants will be provided with gloves, grabbers, trash bags, water, and snacks to effectively take part in the cleanup.
Stream Clean Saturday’s approach has effectively brought to light the importance of maintaining the integrity of valuable water sources which not only serve as vital wildlife habitats but also as a cornerstone of neighborhood allure. Volunteers who have dedicated their time over the past year are a testament to what concerted community effort can achieve. As per the city's spirit of gratitude, volunteers at this weekend’s event will be treated to free hotdogs, courtesy of Santina’s Smokehouse, as a token of appreciation for their unwavering dedication.
