The city of Lawton is recognizing outstanding community members during this year’s Extra Mile Day observance. At the recent City Council meeting, Mayor Stan Booker presented proclamations to three honorees—Joslyn Wood, Max Sasseen, and Jeannette Klein—for their dedication to volunteerism and service. Extra Mile Day, observed on Saturday, honors individuals who demonstrate exceptional commitment to their communities.
According to the City of Lawton website, Joslyn Wood was recognized for organizing the Steps Under Stars and Stripes Veterans Walk, a 24-hour event at the Lawton-Fort Sill Veterans Center honoring U.S. veterans. This year’s walk is scheduled for Friday next week. Wood also coordinates the Park-O-Treat event at Elmer Thomas Park, which features trick-or-treating and family activities.
Jeannette Klein received recognition for her work with Children United, an organization that promotes inclusive play opportunities for all children. She oversees the United Children’s Playground at Elmer Thomas Park, which provides accessible recreational space for children of all abilities.
Max Sasseen was honored for his service with the McMahon Auditorium Authority, where he helps oversee the Carnegie Library and the National Guard Armory. He works with the Arts & Humanities Division to maintain these historic landmarks for community use.
Through the recognition of these individuals, the City of Lawton marks its participation in the national Extra Mile Day initiative, highlighting local efforts that contribute to the city’s growth and community spirit.
