The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) has issued updated guidance for hunters operating in Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) Control Areas, particularly those hunting feral hogs. The update follows confirmation of a CWD-positive wild deer in Catahoula Parish earlier this year, affecting hunters in Deer Areas 1 and 2.

According to Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries release, baiting restrictions remain a key part of the CWD Control Area Rule. Within the Enhanced Mitigation Zone, supplemental feeding, baiting, and hunting over bait are prohibited. However, limited baiting for feral hog trapping and bear harvest permits is allowed in the CWD Buffer Zone using non-stationary, mechanical, or electronic broadcast methods.

An exemption allows trappers to use bait types not typically consumed by white-tailed deer. Approved options include corn treated with blood meal or soured corn. Blood meal is commonly available in stores, while soured corn—corn soaked in water for several days—produces a strong odor that attracts feral hogs but deters deer.

These measures aim to reduce deer congregation near traps and help prevent the spread of CWD. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries continues to monitor conditions and provide updates to support hunters and wildlife management efforts across the state.
