When Joey Yong found herself at a crossroads after earning two bachelor’s degrees from Transylvania University, she turned to the University of Cincinnati for her next step. The Lexington native, holding both a B.S. in computer science and a B.A. in digital arts and media, chose to continue her education in the hopes of bettering her chances in a tough job market.
Despite graduating in 2023, Yong faced challenges finding work, a plight that is not uncommon among recent grads. According to UC's news article, she weighed her options and, on the suggestion of a family member, turned her sights to UC for its highly regarded Master of Science in Information Technology program. "My mom actually recommended it to me after I told her I was interested in IT," Yong said in the interview with UC.
UC's School of Information Technology presented a stark contrast to her experiences at a small private university. Yong was met with an energetic campus culture and a bustling urban setting that was a departure from her past academic environment. The transition seems to have been beneficial, opening up new avenues for leadership and networking opportunities that were not previously available to her.
Believing in the strength of UC's program and the promise of future employment, Yong took the leap and applied to the MSIT program. "It was really refreshing to have such a variety of classes," she explained to UC's news team. Yong’s initiative demonstrates a proactive stance in the face of uncertainty, a quality that resonates with many who find themselves navigating the rough seas of post-college employment.
