A Long Island teacher has been suspended from Wading River School amid allegations of sexting a purported 13-year-old girl, who in actuality was an adult man with a vigilante group. The teacher's inappropriate online behavior was brought to light by Predator Poachers Long Island, a group targeting individuals seeking to exploit minors. In a YouTube video streamed by the group, the teacher can be heard admitting to the sexting and accessing child pornography, as reported by ABC 7 New York.
According to the vigilante group's account, the teacher communicated over 100 messages with the decoy from Monday to Wednesday. After their confrontation with the teacher outside the school property, he acknowledged his misdeeds on camera, saying, "I know that it was wrong. I know that I messed up. It is 100 percent on me," the teacher was heard. In the midst of this scandal, the Suffolk County Police have confirmed a criminal investigation is underway, and the school district has barred the teacher from school grounds pending the investigation's results, as stated in a statement obtained by ABC 7 New York.
The actions of Long Island Predator Poachers fall within a larger trend of online vigilantes targeting alleged pedophiles, often broadcasting their confrontations with the accused individuals. However, while these groups claim to serve the interests of justice, their methods have raised concerns about the potential impact on official police investigations. As mentioned by the The Independent, the efficacy and ethics of such "pedophile hunter" groups are under scrutiny, with over 170 violent attacks by vigilantes reported since 2023 according to the New York Times.
The revelation has alarmed parents of children who were taught by the accused. "I'm sick to my stomach, it's disgusting," parent Kristen Miracle told ABC 7 New York. Following the incident, the school district has offered counseling to those affected.
As the situation develops, the teacher's identity has yet to be revealed publicly, and no charges have been formally announced. The Suffolk County Police have declined to provide further details pending the ongoing investigation, which was confirmed by a request for comment from the The Independent.
