In an alert that might have slipped under the radar for most, but hits home for hundreds of thousands in Louisiana, Governor Jeff Landry is sounding the alarm for SNAP welfare cardholders in the state. Starting November 1, those relying on SNAP benefits will find no new money on their cards, a direct result of the ongoing federal government shutdown in Washington, DC. As reported by the official announcement, pre-existing benefits will still be usable, but nothing new will be coming in until the federal government reopens.
With the USDA stating earlier this summer, that more than 16% of Louisiana's population relies on these benefits, the impact could be profound. The Governor pointed fingers straight at the federal government, particularly the U.S. Senate, where he stated, "The U.S. Senate is failing to open the federal government in Washington, DC. SNAP benefits are paid for by the federal government in Washington, and we simply administer the program here in Louisiana. Without the funds we cannot provide the benefits," according to a press release. Landry's message takes on an urgent tone, calling on citizens to reach out to Democrat Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to push for the reopening of the federal government.
The Louisiana Department of Health, which has oversight of the state's SNAP program, will be starting their notification campaign this week. Recipients of SNAP will receive information stating that until the federal government reopens, November benefits will not be added to their cards. Bruce D. Greenstein, Secretary of the Louisiana Department of Health, emphasized the gravity of the situation, remarking, "All Louisiana SNAP recipients should be aware that there will be no new benefits added to their cards starting November 1st unless the federal government in Washington, DC reopens," as noted in the government's communication. Retailers are also being equipped with notices to inform shoppers of the current fund's situation.
Reflecting the dire circumstance, the state has created a dedicated website, https://dcshutdown.la.gov, for Louisiana residents to stay updated on this developing issue. The purpose of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is to provide financial assistance for food to low-income households, a federally funded initiative through the U.S. Department of Agriculture, essential to the health and wellbeing of many.
