Maple Grove made a splash at the American Water Works Association (AWWA) Minnesota Section's 108th annual conference, not only soaking up knowledge but also clinching a win in a high-pressure competition. Public Works employees Isaac Sprecher and Brian Nielsen represented the City of Maple Grove, demonstrating both their expertise and competitive spirit.
During the conference, described by the City of Maple Grove's social media post, attendees dove into a range of presentations from water community experts, sharing insights likely to ripple through their work back home. That wasn't all, as Isaac and Brian got their hands dirty in Hydrant Hysteria, a skills competition where speed, accuracy, and the ability to make a fire hydrant function correctly are key. Despite it being their first year at the conference and the pressure of racing against the clock and other teams, Maple Grove's team surged to third place with a time of 1 minute, 54 seconds, a testament to their swift proficiency.
Hydrant Hysteria pits two-person teams against each other in a test of mechanical dexterity and teamwork, which Sprecher and Nielsen apparently have in abundance, bringing home not just a trophy but some "well-earned bragging rights," as the City of Maple Grove proudly proclaimed on Facebook. The event, though friendly in nature, is emblematic of the significant role public works professionals play in maintaining essential services—a crucial but often understated cog in the wheel of our daily lives.
It may have been Maple Grove’s debut in the Hydrant Hysteria arena, but their third-place finish is certainly no small feat. It stands as a reminder of the camaraderie and collaboration that underpin these professional gatherings, where a spirit of competition melds with a collective endeavor for improvement and knowledge exchange in the water works field. Isaac Sprecher and Brian Nielsen have set the bar for Maple Grove, and their triumph at the AWWA conference just might be the catalyst for more accolades in years to come.
