In a case that highlights the grievous betrayal of familial trust, Maricopa County has seen justice served in a chilling child molestation saga. Mark Alan Rodman, born August 1962, will spend the rest of his life behind bars after being handed a 334-year prison sentence for sexually abusing young children within his own family, as reported by the Maricopa County Attorney's Office.
The harrowing details came to light in April 2021 when two relatives courageously reported that Rodman had molested them between 2011 and 2014, periods when they were approximately 7 and 11 years old. Following their disclosures, another family member stepped forward recounting abuse by Rodman starting from 1995 when that victim was just 11, extending through to 1999. Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell, spoke on the significant bravery these survivors exhibited, “It takes an extraordinary amount of courage to speak up against an abuser, especially one who was meant to protect you,” according to a statement published by the Maricopa County Attorney's Office.
Salient in the course of the legal proceedings was the jury's decision this August. They convicted Rodman on two counts of Molestation of a Child, a Class Two Felony and Dangerous Crime Against Children, and fifteen counts of Sexual Conduct with a Minor, also a Class Two Felony and Dangerous Crime Against Children. The court's sentence laid out 17 years for each molestation count and 20 years for every count relating to sexual conduct with a minor. Undoubtedly, the extensive sentence reflects the gravity of Rodman's crimes, as stated by the Maricopa County Attorney's Office.
Mitchell's office heralded the verdict and sentencing, and stressed the importance of this outcome for those affected. "I commend the survivors for their bravery, and the prosecutors who worked on this case for achieving justice. May this moment be the first step in their journey toward healing," Mitchell expressed in her public statement, as per the Maricopa County Attorney's Office.
