The Georgia Department of Natural Resources has lifted the statewide annual burn ban as of Tuesday, allowing citizens to engage in open burning through the end of April. City officials are reminding residents that a permit is required for every burn, and one must be obtained for each day burning is planned, as per the city's announcement.

As of yesterday, Marietta residents are allowed to burn leaves, pine straw, and small branches between 10 a.m. and one hour before sunset. However, permits will only be issued if weather and wind conditions are safe, according to the Marietta Fire Prevention Division. Officials also warn that any burn creating excessive smoke may result in a visit from the fire department.

The rules are straightforward: fires must be kept at least 50 feet from any structure, with a garden hose on hand and ready to use. Fires cannot be left unattended, and an adult must be present at all times. While the measures may seem strict for a small burn, officials stress they are necessary to keep the community safe.

For more information on the guidelines or to obtain a burning permit, visit the city's website or get in touch with the City of Marietta's Fire Marshal's Office at 770-794-5466.
