Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell has joined a multistate coalition opposing President Trump’s directive to deploy National Guard troops to Chicago. According to a Office of the Attorney General release, Campbell is working with 24 other attorneys general and governors in support of Illinois, which is challenging the order in court.
The coalition argues that the deployment, which also included California, Washington D.C., and Oregon, was carried out without the consent of the affected governors and violates constitutional limits on federal authority.
In a filing before the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals, the coalition submitted an amicus brief asserting that the order infringes on state sovereignty. The court has granted temporary relief preventing the deployment to Illinois while the case proceeds.
Governors from Kansas, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania have joined the attorneys general in supporting the challenge, which seeks to maintain the balance of power between state and federal governments.
