Memphis residents are being invited to participate in the planned renovation of the historic Cossitt Library's West Wing. The project aims to repurpose the unused section of the library into a cultural center as part of downtown revitalization efforts.

A community engagement event will take place on Saturday next week from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Cossitt Library. According to the City of Memphis, the West Wing restoration will be led by the Division of Housing and Community Development. Initial funding for structural stabilization will come from the federal Community Development Block Grant program.

The Cossitt Library, established in 1893, has significant historical ties to Memphis, including its role in Civil Rights history. The West Wing, built in 1925, covers 25,000 square feet across multiple levels and a rooftop. While some basic updates were made during the East Wing’s 2022 renovation, the West Wing has remained closed to the public.

The project is expected to include partnerships with institutions such as the National Civil Rights Museum, Brooks Museum of Art, University of Memphis School of Law, and the Ernest C. Withers Foundation.

Additional information about the renovation and opportunities for public involvement is available on the City of Memphis website.
