Meta Platforms, the tech behemoth behind social media giants like Facebook and Instagram, has confirmed layoffs impacting more than 300 employees in the Bay Area. According to filings with the California Employment Development Department, cited by the San Francisco Chronicle, Meta will be letting go of 318 workers in Menlo Park by Dec. 22. These layoffs are part of a broader series of cuts, approximately 600 in total, previously reported within Meta's Superintelligence Labs division.
Despite the concerning headlines, Meta appears to be actively managing the transition for those affected. Per the San Francisco Chronicle, the company indicated its efforts to support many soon-to-be former employees in finding new roles within Meta. The layoffs are a strategic move, part of a larger initiative to create a more agile AI organization as Meta shifts its focus to next-generation AI projects.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, this move to downsize comes in a year described by CEO Mark Zuckerberg as "intense." Although the company's AI division is facing a significant workforce reduction, Meta continues to put considerable resources into AI development and hardware, pointing to a prioritization of performance and innovation. Meanwhile, the layoffs extend beyond Meta's doors, reaching across the Bay Area's tech industry, which has seen a series of job cuts throughout 2025.
Fellow Silicon Valley heavyweight, Applied Materials, has also announced cutbacks. As reported in a Silicon Valley article, the company communicated plans to eliminate 363 jobs. The layoffs will affect multiple locations, with most of the reductions occurring in Santa Clara and Sunnyvale, impacting workers right before the holiday season around Dec. 23. The companies stressed that the layoffs are permanent, and affected employees do not have the right to displace less senior workers.
