Michigan launched the Mass Timber Catalyst Program to encourage the use of mass timber in construction by offering $25,000–$75,000 to project teams, along with technical support and a learning network. Officials say mass timber aligns with state sustainability goals and could strengthen the local forest products economy, which already generates more than $26 billion annually, according to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

Though not yet produced locally, Michigan’s forest resources could support home-grown manufacturing with an estimated $300 million GDP impact. As Sandra Lupien put it, “From getting people housed faster in healthier, more sustainable buildings, to spurring economic development in our rural forested communities, there are so many reasons to advance mass timber construction,” as reported by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

Cheri Holman of the Michigan Green Building Collaborative said the program supports Michigan’s move toward using mass timber and will help project teams address design, procurement and code requirements. WoodWorks – Wood Products Council and its CEO Jennifer Cover are participating by providing education and resources. Cover said, “The DNR’s strategy of supporting rural economies and forest health by stimulating interest in modern wood buildings shows both leadership and foresight,” as stated by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.
