The Hispanic Latino Commission of Michigan marked its 50th anniversary with a gala in Lansing, attended by more than 300 people, including current and former commissioners, community leaders, elected officials, and union representatives. During the event, 51 Latino Legacy Leaders were honored for their contributions to the Latinx community, and 20 Nuestro Futuro Scholarship recipients were recognized for their academic achievements and leadership, according to the Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity.
The Hispanic Heritage Awards were also presented, with Lorenzo Lopez receiving the Community Service award and Stephany Yach Saavedra named Educator of the Year. Additional awards included Arts in the Community and Young Changemaker, which went to Cynthia Martinez and Karinna Martinez, reflecting HLCOM’s continued support for Latinx communities in Michigan, as reported by the Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity.
Poppy Hernandez, director of the Office of Global Michigan, which houses HLCOM, said, "These scholarships and awards are a true testament to our commitment to expand economic opportunity and prosperity for all." The event included cultural performances, such as a traditional dance by the Greater Lansing Ballet Folklorico and a tribute to HLCOM’s origins in 1975. Commissioners Florensio Hernandez and Aurora Sauceda presented awards and provided opening remarks. HLCOM Executive Director Dr. Isabel Montemayor-Vazquez said, “This was more than a celebration of 50 years. It was a testament to the resilience, vision and contributions of generations of Latinx leaders in Michigan,” as mentioned by the Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity.
