Michigan’s State Board of Education has released proposed updates to standards for preparing music teachers, with public comment open until December 4. The standards would guide educator preparation institutions and are set for a potential vote in late winter 2026, according to the Michigan Department of Education.

A team of college and pre-K-12 experts revised the standards to ensure future teachers are ready to deliver strong music instruction. Interim State Superintendent Dr. Sue C. Carnell said, “Having music standards for teachers is essential to ensure that students who are interested in music can receive a high-quality, well-rounded education,” as reported by the Michigan Department of Education.

The current standards for preparing music teachers in Michigan have been in place since 2004 and guide how educator preparation programs are designed. Proposed updates to those standards are now open for public comment through the Teachers of Music Preparation Standards Public Comment website. After all feedback is reviewed, a final recommendation will be presented to the State Board of Education, as stated by the Michigan Department of Education.
